Is the health department allowed to come into apartments?

We live in an apartment and I find it strange/unfair that the health department "inspects" our place. They do not go into every house and inspect their house every year, so why is it they come into apartments? Is it because they want to intimidate the "poor"? I do not understand this and quite frankly, it annoys me. Thank you for any reasons behind the matter.

Of course they can. Your landlord either has a reason for thinking you are messy (maybe you are messy), or maybe the house has structural issues and the landlord wants to make sure it’s up to code. Or possibly you’re on section 8 and the LL does this to everyone on section 8, since they aren’t paying for their own housing and are less likely to take care of it.

We can’t know for sure why. But yes, it’s legal. It may be discrimination based on your income level, but there is sound statistical reasoning behind it. People who don’t pay for their own housing are less likely to take care of it.

The health department is inspecting your apartment to protect YOU from an unhealthy living environment. They are protecting you and your health – at no expense to you. Why would you not welcome that?

    Best wishes and good luck.

Are you living in a rent subsidized place or are you on Section 8 housing? If so, that is why they are inspecting. They want to make sure the place is up to their standards. If you don’t like it, get off of housing and pay your rent 100% on your own.
