Well I have been … Well I have been with starbucks for six years and have never had a problem maintaining benefits. Plus it depends on your manager. They have full control of your hrs. If you have good availability you should maintain 20 hrs a week with no problem at all.
Stupid video. If … Stupid video. If Starbucks’ healthcare policy is insufficient for your needs as an employee, you have every right to seek employment elsewhere, where your needs can be met. And, if you find their practices ‘sickening’ as consumers, don’t write them, stop buying their products.
I think more what … I think more what they should be talking about is how the raise the insurance prices from $40 a paycheck to $90! Or the fact that the coverage is BS! My boyfriend and his two sisters work for Starbucks and I did. If they need to go the hospital it cost the $200 for the ER. I am an uninsured student who can get the same benefit. Also his sister pays $140 for a medication that cost $150 without insurance and $100 for students. Let’s just say that this company is falling faster and faster!
wow… you have no … wow… you have no idea what you are talking about… I work for starbucks…
and if your not getting above 20 hours, its because your a lazy bum…
stop pointing fingers… you got only yourself to blame…
where else can you get full health insurance for a parttime job?
well, it isn’t … well, it isn’t actually limited to Starbucks. I’ve had this happen to me (I guess it’s worse?) twice before, where a company did not offer me enough hours to even have health insurance. When I confronted my employer about this in my last job, she skirted the question and just said they couldn’t offer any more hours.
They don’t mind you walking away, either- there’s always people who are desperate for a job, and that makes us all a little more desperate. Dunno what to do about it, though.
So… let me get … So… let me get this straight. Starbucks does a terrible job of offering health insurance.. and you’re asking us to push for government legislation to change the way Starbucks offer’s Starbuck’s Health Insurance?
This makes no sense to me. Why does the government need to step into the equation? If you aren’t happy with your employer, quit…. it’s that simple… and we don’t have to grant more power to the government. You just quit, walk away, find something else.
ive been a partner … ive been a partner for 4 years now and have worked in multiple stores and would like to say this is the complete opposite of my experience with the system. never have i seen any of my managers purposefully cut partner hours for them not to receive benefits, nor have i heard of other managers doing so. almost everyone in my store qualifies for benefits. the few who do not only work weekends. i’m not saying what this guy is saying didn’t happen. just looks like cherry picking to me.
you could have … you could have picked up more hours from other stores the previous weeks and you would have been good. you need 240 hours each quarter to keep benefits, if you would have worked a little more at your store and surrounding stores, then you would have been able to make up for the lost hours. dont complain when not that many part time jobs barely get benefits anyways.
Maybe they should … Maybe they should learn the word
KARMA.
They wouldn’t be closeing stores like they have been.
I just love companies that screw their BEST ASSET, EMPLOYEES!!!
And go in the Hole. Makes my day:-)
I LOVE KARMA!!
I work 60 Hours a … I work 60 Hours a week in the summer Doing construction to pay for college, and 25 Hours a week when I’m in college (Not like this lazy hippy who doesn’t even work 20 hours a week) , I don’t have health insurance and I really don’t care. I hate these lazy whores.
Why should a company provide health insurance for someone who’s not generating enough profit to make it worthwhile?
this video is … this video is bullshit! i work for starbucks and they NEVER cut your hours the week before the quarter is over. this video is full of lies and incorrect information.
As I’ve said many … As I’ve said many times before, just because that us your experience does not mean that these workers ‘experiences are not real or legitimate.
I don’t know where … I don’t know where you got those numbers from but it’s untrue. I work for Starbucks and I’ve yet to have my hours cut before any quarter. I’ve worked 35-40 hours per week for most of the 9 years I’ve worked there. There was a period where I had to cut down to twenty hours and that was my choice, not theirs.
Well said … Well said boomer1949! I worked at Starbucks initially for almost 5 years – its a 4 month catch up! So if you don’t make the required hours at the end of the quarter, you are still insured for four months. This story is filled with inaccuracies.
Starbucks is consistently on the list of “100 Best Companies to Work For,” because they offer Health Insurance to people who work as little as 20 hrs per week.
And you are allowed to pick up hours at any of the 10,000+ Starbucks in the country.
Re: tbwobbly. You … Re: tbwobbly. You used the word ‘maybe,’ a lot in your comment. I am not telling you maybe, . . . I worked as a barista for Starbucks and was there for almost 5 years. You are allowed to call up any of the 10,000 Starbucks in the country (e.g. 200 in Manhattan alone) and ask for hours. And prior to the recession, stores were always in need of help . . . I consistently got 40 hours a week. Starbucks is one of the first companies to offer health insurance for part-time employees. They are leaders.
Its 240 hours per … Its 240 hours per quarter one needs to obtain to qualify for insurance. You have to exceed an average of 20 hours per week. So again, I restate . . . it is irresponsible to wait until the last week to get to ones required 20 hour per week avg. when you’re allowed to pick up hours at any of the 10,000 stores in the U.S.
plus, if they only … plus, if they only give you a certain number of hours per week it’s not really up to you…and maybe they tried to pick up shifts at other stores but they couldn’t b/c a) they were all full b) the bosses wouldn’t give them the hours b/c the company does not want people to get the 20/week average….for someone with ‘obama’ in his/her screen name you’d think he/she’d be more progressive.
pay attention, it’s … pay attention, it’s not a required number..it’s an average. you have to average a certain number of hours per week, so if they cut your hours in the last week, you no longer have that average. why don’t people actually listen?!!

and now starbucks just doubled health care costs for it’s employees, while taking in $256 million in profits last quarter.
