Salons and barbershops all over the country are collecting their clippings to be used for oil clean-up in the Gulf of Mexico. There are many hair salons in Charleston that have jumped in and join the effort. According to reports, the hair clippings are encased in nylon hose to create a bundle that is then placed in the oil covered sea water. The bundles attract the crude oil like a magnet and the bundle soaks up to five times it’s weight. The bundles are then collected and the oil is extracted. One of the great things about this process is the oil is still viable and can be processed so it is not an environmental problem. The bundles can then be reused up to ten times.
